Carlsberg : Be a Shark!

An experimental animation initiated by one of very own CG artist, SK KAi. Here’s some Q&A with the artist himself, an insight into his mind space:

1. Tell us about yourself and your role in ASTATICA.
SK: I am Lim Shi Kai from ASTATICA and I’m a CG generalist.

2. What inspired you to create this and what do you hope to achieve with it?
SK: At first, I was browsing around Pinterest and I saw an interesting picture of a boat inside a glass bottle, and I remember watching a movie trailer about giant sharks called “The Meg” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Mrfh6dZOFc). This is where I got my inspiration from.

3. Can you please tell us about your process and the challenges you face?
SK: In the beginning, I was only creating a still image of a shark swallowing a boat. Then Alvin suggested to create a short animation, utilising the “parallax” kind of technique. But I wanted to create something more than that, so I started to find some references > storyboard planning > CG animation > liquid simulation > choices of camera lenses > lighting test > render test > online compositing > final render.

4. If you have another chance to do this, how would you do it differently?
SK: Sure, definitely I would do it differently. Maybe fuse it with futuristic and sci-fi looks.

5. Any final advice to all your fans out there?
SK: I got no fans la

Thanks SK for sharing!
